Vocabulary

Why is vocabulary important...

  • Children must have word knowledge to make sense of the words they decode.

  • When students begin reading to learn, they need a large basic vocabulary to understand new concepts or topics.

  • Children build their vocabulary by learning new words and connecting them to what they already know.

"The Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic serves as a central hub for community learning and tutoring. They have programs for students in K-12, and resources for parents, education professionals, and the community." The clinic developed a parent resource series called, Raising Readers, which has short, yet informative and helpful tools for parents.

Don't give your child too few or too many words at one time. A good rule of thumb is 5 per week.
