Comprehension

Comprehension is...

the understanding and interpretation of what is read.

To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to

1- decode what they read

2- make connections between what they read and what they already know

3- think deeply about what they have read.

"The Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic serves as a central hub for community learning and tutoring. They have programs for students in K-12, and resources for parents, education professionals, and the community." The clinic developed a parent resource series called, Raising Readers, which has short, yet informative and helpful tools for parents.

What can I do at home?

Make Connections

Connect to what your child already knows.

For example:

*The book has a picture of a beach*

You: This reminds me of when we go to Ocean City each summer.

What do you think of when you see this picture?

Child: (Answer should be about connection to the beach)
